In the typical romantic symphony orchestra, the trombones, which are part of the low brass, sit well back and are hidden by the violins an woodwinds. What they lose in visibility they more than make up for with their radiant and voluminous sound, which is reminiscent of the human voice. This sound is also the reason why the trombones have traditionally enjoyed great popularity supporting vocal compositions. However, the low bass trombone in particular rarely appears in the concert literature as a solo instrument accompanied by orchestra. It was not until the 20th century that composers began to discover the instrument more and more as an effective musical protagonist and to compose works for bass trombone and orchestra.
This CD combines three main works from this repertoire with selected, newly interpreted opera arias in which the bass trombone performs the vocal line.
